Iron man 2 vs Whiplash

You may have here below a first look at Mickey Rourke as Iron Man's new nemesis, Ivan Vanko aka Whiplash:

Whiplash makes his first appearance at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix.

Ivan Vanko is a Russian ex-con who managed to build his own twisted version of the Iron Man suit. His nickname comes from a pair of deadly whips which are powered by the suit's glowing chest piece.

Director Jon Favreau has been hinting at the similarity between the technology used in Iron Man's armor and Whiplash's:

"The technologies are definitely related, and that’s part of the core theme of the film"

Here's a new picture showing Whiplash in his full glory:

Whiplash won't be the only enemy in the movie Iron Man 2: Tony Stark will also compete with Stark Industries' rival Justin Hammer (played by Sam Rockwell). Besides he will have to cope with his new superhero status...

According to a co-worker of mine who closely follows the Iron Man comic books and character, the director (Jon Favreau) is apparently not following the storyline of the comic. Whiplash is not Russian and he isn't the alter ego of Ivan Vanko. Ivan Vanko is the Crimson Dynamo. Whiplash is actually the alter ego of Tony Scarlotti(?), who isn't Russian. So what gives? Has Jon Favreau combined these two characters into one villian? Why would he do this? Of course it is hard to tell what exactly is going on since there is very little information about the movie and what villians will be a part of it.
If there is someone else out there that can explain all this to me, I would appreciate an explanation. I really loved Iron Man and can't wait for the sequel to come out next year but I hate to see the storyline of the comic book suffer at the hands of a director who can't or won't be more loyal to the fans of the comic book.

So if Whiplash and Hammer are involved in the story, and the tech for Whiplash's suit is simular to IM's in the movie, am I the only one thinking they are building tword the "Armor Wars" story?

They def are combining the characters of the Crimson Dynamo and Whiplash - to avoid another armor on armor confrontation like the first movie.

The reason for making Whiplash Russian, is so that he can be connected to The Black Widow, who needs to be introduced as not only a love interest for Stark, but also someone who could appear in the Avengers and Shield movies forthcoming.

And yes, it's obvious to me that they are tapping into the Armor Wars story line - makes sense. You can pull a lot of the stuff that happens in the marvel universe with that storyline - the same way the super soldier program does for other characters.

Love the suspense in the teaser. Its not like War Machine or Black Widow could save Stark from Whiplash or that its obvious that Whiplash is going to end up Electrocutting himself probably due to Iron Man dodging his attack.

This will definently be a good film however i dont like the fact that they replaced Terrence Howard. He was the one who showed the emotional side of the story and seemed to connect with Stark on many levels. I dont think Don Cheadle will be able to not only convince fans he is the same charecter but also portray the role as Starks friend.

Looks like crap. Shame, but the sequel curse seems strong in this one.
